VMIC VMIVME Boards: Single Board Computers, Digital I/O and Reflective Memory for VMEbus Systems

VMEbus Single Board Computers, Digital I/O and Reflective Memory Replacement Guide

VMIC (VME Microsystems International Corporation), now part of GE Intelligent Platforms / GE Embedded — is one of the longest-established manufacturers of VMEbus embedded computing boards. VMIVME series boards are deployed in industrial automation, power generation control systems, aerospace and defense test environments, and research instrumentation where the VMEbus standard remains the backbone of long-lifecycle embedded computing architectures.

When a VMIVME board fails in a running system, the path to replacement is rarely straightforward. GE has discontinued many VMIC product lines, and the replacement market for these boards is specialist territory. This guide covers the key VMIVME board categories and part numbers, their functions, and how to source replacements.

Industrial Partner  stocks VMIC VMIVME replacement boards across SBC, digital I/O, analog I/O, and reflective memory categories. Browse VMIVME parts or request a quote.

VMEbus and the VMIC VMIVME Product Family

VMEbus (Versa Module Europa bus) is a computer bus standard defined by IEC 60821 that has been the backbone of ruggedized embedded computing since the early 1980s. Its 32-bit architecture, robust mechanical format, and deterministic performance characteristics made it the platform of choice for industrial control, military electronics, and scientific instrumentation — applications where reliability over decades matters more than following consumer technology cycles.

VMIC's VMIVME series provides the full spectrum of VMEbus board types: single board computers (SBCs) with integrated processors, digital input and output boards, analog I/O boards, communication modules, and the reflective memory boards that enable deterministic data sharing between multiple VMEbus nodes.

VMIVME Single Board Computers (SBCs)

VMIC's single board computer modules provide the processing core of VMEbus control systems. They host the operating system, application software, and control logic that drives the entire VME system.

VMIVME-7648 and VMIVME-7648-540

The VMIVME-7648 is a high-performance VMEbus single board computer based on an Intel Pentium III processor running at up to 1.26 GHz. It features 32-bit addressing, a 64-bit data bus, and 256KB of advanced data transfer cache via dual independent bus architecture. The standard configuration integrates VGA video, keyboard/mouse ports, dual serial ports, dual USB ports, and dual Ethernet interfaces.

The VMIVME-7648-540 is the 128MB RAM variant of this platform, configured with VME P1 and P2 connectors and VME 64 support. It is widely deployed as the controller node in VME-based industrial automation and process control systems, including GE Speedtronic Mark VI turbine control architectures.

VMIVME Digital I/O Boards

Digital I/O boards interface the VMEbus system to field devices receiving discrete input signals from sensors, switches, and detectors, and sending control outputs to actuators, solenoids, and relays.

VMIVME-1101 — 32-bit TTL Digital Input Board

The VMIVME-1101 is a 32-bit TTL digital input board with Change of State (COS) interrupt capability. COS interrupts allow the host processor to respond to input changes without polling — critical for time-sensitive applications in turbine protection systems and industrial safety controllers.

VMIVME-2532A — 32-bit Digital Input / 32-bit Digital Output

The VMIVME-2532A is a combined 32-bit digital input and 32-bit digital output board. It provides 64 TTL-level I/O points in a single VME slot and is one of the most widely deployed VMIC digital I/O boards in industrial control applications. It is specified in many GE Speedtronic Mark VI system configurations as the primary discrete I/O module.

VMIVME-2528 — 128-bit TTL Digital Input/Output Board

The VMIVME-2528 provides 128 TTL-level bidirectional digital I/O points in a single VMEbus slot. With high-density I/O per slot, it is deployed in applications requiring maximum I/O channel count within a limited rack space, common in test systems and distributed turbine control configurations.

VMIVME Reflective Memory and Communication Boards

Reflective memory is a key technology in deterministic multi-node VMEbus systems. It allows multiple VMEbus nodes to share data in real time, each node sees updates from other nodes appear directly in its own memory space with minimal latency.

VMIVME-5550 — Multidrop Reflective Memory

The VMIVME-5550 is a multidrop reflective memory board with interrupt capability. Memory options range from 256KB to 512KB, with FIFO transfer options of 512 bytes to 4KB. It is deployed in multi-node VME systems where multiple controllers must maintain synchronized views of process data — a standard configuration in triple-redundant turbine protection systems.

VMIVME-5010 — VMEbus Global Interrupt DSUB Expander

The VMIVME-5010 is an 8-channel VMEbus global interrupt expander board with DSUB connector. It extends the interrupt handling capability of VMEbus systems where multiple interrupt sources must be managed across distributed I/O nodes.

VME-MXI — VMEbus to MXI Interface

The VME-MXI (also VME-MXI-2) is a National Instruments VMEbus interface board that connects a VMEbus chassis to a PC host via the MXI-2 (Multisystem eXtension Interface) high-speed link. It enables LabVIEW and NI-VXI software running on a PC to directly control and program VMEbus devices — widely used in automated test equipment (ATE) and research instrumentation systems.

Sourcing Discontinued VMIVME Boards

GE Embedded (formerly GE Intelligent Platforms) has discontinued many VMIVME product lines as the VMEbus platform has been superseded in new designs by VPX, CompactPCI, and PCI Express architectures. This creates a significant challenge for facilities operating long-lifecycle systems that continue to depend on VMEbus hardware.

The specific VMIVME boards listed in this guide; particularly the 7648/7648-540 SBCs, 2532A digital I/O boards, and 5550 reflective memory modules — are all in active demand for replacement in existing installations. Because GE no longer manufactures them, sourcing requires a specialist supplier with genuine secondary market inventory.

Key verification steps when sourcing VMIVME replacement boards:

•       Confirm the exact part number and sub-variant (e.g. VMIVME-5550-0 vs VMIVME-5550-00 — different FIFO configurations)

•       Verify the VME64 compatibility of the replacement board with the existing backplane revision

•       Request confirmation that the replacement board has been tested and verified as functional prior to shipment

•       For SBCs, confirm firmware and BIOS version compatibility with the application software before installation

Industrial Partner  specializes in sourcing discontinued VMIVME boards — SBCs, digital I/O, analog I/O, and reflective memory — for VMEbus system maintenance. Browse VMIVME boards or contact the sourcing team for availability confirmation.

Conclusion

VMIC VMIVME boards remain the core computing and I/O hardware in a large installed base of VMEbus industrial control, test, and power generation systems worldwide. The VMIVME-7648 SBC family, the VMIVME-2532A and VMIVME-2528 digital I/O boards, and the VMIVME-5550 reflective memory modules are among the most critical and most searched spare parts in this segment.

When these boards fail in operating systems, replacement availability depends entirely on the depth of the supplier's secondary market inventory and their capability to verify genuine board condition before dispatch.
